 Akpabio Enforces New Senate Rules, Halts Oshiomhole Mid-Session Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved decisively on Wednesday to enforce newly tightened leadership rules, shutting down a challenge from Adams Oshiomhole during plenary and signaling a firmer approach to discipline within the chamber. The confrontation came less than 24 hours after the Senate amended its Standing Orders to tighten eligibility requirements for presiding offices. As Akpabio commenced reading the Votes and Proceedings, Oshiomhole attempted to interject with a point of order an action the Senate President promptly disallowed, citing provisions in the updated 2023 Standing Orders that prohibit such interruptions at that stage of proceedings.
