The Edo Health Regulation and Monitoring Agency (EDOHERMA) has inaugurated two Technical Working Groups (TWGs) to develop comprehensive regulatory guidelines for blood bank services and cosmetic procedures in Edo State, reinforcing the Government's commitment to strengthening healthcare regulation, improving service delivery, and safeguarding public health.
According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EDOHERMA, Dr. Adesuwa Urhoghide-Edigin, the inauguration marks a significant milestone in Agency's efforts at establishing robust regulatory frameworks for emerging and critical areas of healthcare practice, as well as ensuring that service providers operate in line with nationally and internationally accepted standards.
At the inauguration, Dr. Urhoghide-Edigin stressed the need for clear, practical, and evidence-based guidelines to regulate the evolving healthcare sector. She noted that the proposed frameworks are designed to protect the public, support healthcare providers, strengthen regulatory compliance, and promote quality healthcare services across the State.
Dr. Urhoghide-Edigin identified blood bank services and cosmetic procedures as two critical areas requiring urgent regulatory attention to eliminate unsafe practices, improve patient outcomes, and strengthen public confidence in healthcare delivery. She emphasized that the collection, testing, storage, distribution, and administration of blood must be guided by clearly defined standards to ensure quality, safety, and traceability throughout the transfusion process.
The CEO while noting the rapid growth of cosmetic and aesthetic services in the State, cautioned that the absence of standardised guidelines could expose clients to avoidable health risks. According to her, the development of comprehensive regulations will promote professionalism, patient safety, and ethical practice within the Sector. She charged members of the TWGs to approach their assignment with dedication, professionalism, and a shared commitment to protecting the health and wellbeing of Edo residents. She expressed confidence that their recommendations would strengthen quality assurance, improve regulatory compliance, and enhance public confidence in both blood bank and cosmetic services.
The Blood Bank TWG comprised of experienced professionals drawn from the medical laboratory, haematology, pathology, and blood transfusion sectors, while the Cosmetic Procedures TWG included specialists in dermatology, maxillofacial surgery, restorative dentistry, otorhinolaryngology, periodontology, emergency medicine, and other relevant fields.
The multidisciplinary composition of both committees reflects EDOHERMA's commitment to developing practical, inclusive, and evidence-based guidelines that meet global best practices while addressing the unique healthcare needs of Edo State.
It is expected of the TWGs to submit recommendations that will serve as the foundation for comprehensive regulatory guidelines aimed at improving healthcare quality, patient safety, and professional standards across the blood bank and cosmetic services sectors in Edo State.
