Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, SAN Emerges Best PhD Graduate in Law at Babcock University
By Comrade Mark Anthony Chinedu(Hon Senator )
Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, SAN, has once again distinguished himself by achieving another remarkable milestone in his illustrious legal and academic career, emerging as the Best PhD Graduate in Law at Babcock University. This outstanding accomplishment reflects his unwavering commitment to excellence, lifelong learning, legal scholarship, and public service. It also reinforces his reputation as one of Nigeria's most respected legal practitioners, constitutional lawyers, and human rights advocates, whose influence extends across the legal profession, academia, and public administration.
Born on July 27, 1964, in Awomukwu, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Dr. Ubani's journey to national prominence is one defined by determination, resilience, discipline, and an unyielding passion for justice. His educational path was marked by courage and conviction. Although he initially secured admission to study Political Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), his deep admiration for the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, and his desire to become a lawyer inspired him to withdraw and begin afresh as a law student. That bold decision laid the foundation for an extraordinary legal career. He graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in Law, proceeded to the Nigerian Law School where he also distinguished himself academically, later obtained a Master's Degree in Comparative Constitutional Law from the University of Lagos, and has now crowned his academic journey with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from Babcock University, where he emerged as the overall Best PhD Graduate in Law.
Over the years, Dr. Ubani has built an enviable career as one of Nigeria's foremost constitutional lawyers and public interest advocates. As the Principal Partner of Ubani & Co., a law firm he founded in 1992, he has handled numerous high-profile constitutional, civil, and commercial cases while consistently championing the cause of justice, fairness, and the protection of fundamental human rights. His exceptional contributions to legal practice earned him the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), one of the highest honours in the Nigerian legal profession.
His leadership within the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has equally been remarkable. He served as Chairman of the NBA Ikeja Branch, one of the largest and most influential branches of the association, where he introduced reforms that strengthened professional development, enhanced welfare for lawyers, and promoted unity among members. His successful tenure at the Ikeja Branch paved the way for greater national responsibilities as he was elected the Second National Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association. He also served as Chairman of the NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL), where he played a pivotal role in advancing constitutional democracy, public interest litigation, judicial accountability, and the defence of the rule of law across Nigeria.
Beyond the legal profession, Dr. Ubani has continued to contribute to national development through public service. He currently serves as the Special Adviser to the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, providing expert legal and policy advice on legislative, constitutional, and governance matters. His wealth of experience in constitutional law and public administration has made him a valuable resource in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting sound legislative processes.
Widely regarded as a legal luminary, Dr. Ubani has devoted decades of his life to defending the rule of law, protecting civil liberties, promoting judicial independence, and advocating for good governance. He has remained one of the country's most respected voices on constitutional issues, electoral reforms, human rights, and legal development. Through his numerous public engagements, legal interventions, scholarly contributions, and policy advocacy, he has consistently spoken in defence of democracy and justice, earning widespread respect both within and outside the legal profession.
His impact extends beyond litigation and public service. As a mentor, he has inspired and guided countless young lawyers, encouraging excellence, professionalism, ethical practice, and continuous learning. His commitment to legal education and scholarship has contributed significantly to the development of the next generation of legal practitioners, while his writings, lectures, and public commentaries continue to shape legal discourse in Nigeria.
Emerging as the Best PhD Graduate in Law at Babcock University is not merely another academic achievement but a reflection of Dr. Ubani's enduring belief that education remains the foundation of leadership and societal transformation. It demonstrates that even after attaining the highest levels of professional success, there is always room for intellectual growth, research, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, SAN, remains a shining example of excellence, integrity, resilience, and service. His outstanding achievements in legal practice, leadership within the Nigerian Bar Association, academic scholarship, public service, constitutional advocacy, and mentorship have earned him a lasting place among Nigeria's finest legal minds. His remarkable journey continues to inspire lawyers, students, academics, and professionals across the country, while his enduring contributions to justice, the rule of law, and nation-building will remain an enduring legacy for generations to come.
Congratulations Dr.Monday Onyekachi Ubani
