MLSCN Registrar Commends EDOHERMA's Regulatory Innovations, Pledges Partnership

The Chief Executive Officer of the Edo Healthcare Regulation and Monitoring Agency (EDOHERMA), Dr. Adesuwa Urhoghide, paid a courtesy visit to the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Dr. Donald I. Ofili, at the Council's headquarters in Abuja.

During the visit, Dr. Urhoghide congratulated Dr. Ofili on his appointment as Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and wished him a successful and impactful tenure. She reaffirmed EDOHERMA's commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Council in advancing medical laboratory regulation, healthcare quality and patient safety in Edo State.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both institutions to discuss areas of mutual collaboration and strategies for strengthening healthcare regulation through effective partnerships between Professional Regulatory Councils and State Healthcare Regulatory Agencies.

During the discussions, Dr. Urhoghide presented the EDOHERMA regulatory framework, highlighting the Agency's integrated approach to healthcare regulation, its collaboration with Professional Regulatory Councils and professional associations, and its pioneering digital innovations, including Nigeria's first online healthcare facility verification system established by a State Healthcare Regulatory Agency.

In his remarks, Dr. Ofili disclosed that he was one of the members of the committee that developed the legislation establishing  (HEFAMAA). He expressed his delight at seeing EDOHERMA build upon that foundation by developing a broader and more comprehensive healthcare regulatory model for Edo State.

The Registrar particularly commended EDOHERMA for recognising and preserving the statutory role of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria by making current MLSCN registration and licensing a mandatory requirement for the registration and regulation of medical laboratories operating within Edo State. He noted that this demonstrates respect for existing statutory mandate. He described this as a model of effective inter-agency collaboration which also reflects the principle that effective healthcare regulation is best achieved through partnership, synergy and mutual institutional support/respect rather than usurpation or duplication of responsibilities.

Dr. Ofili further commended EDOHERMA for the remarkable progress it has made within a short period of its establishment. He described the Agency's regulatory model as innovative, forward-looking and worthy of emulation by other States, and praised its commitment to strengthening healthcare regulation through collaboration and institutional partnerships.

He also applauded the passion, dedication and exceptional work ethic demonstrated by the Chief Executive Officer of EDOHERMA in building the Agency into a credible healthcare regulatory institution. He remarked that he wished there were more efficient, passionate and hardworking leaders across Nigeria's health sector with the same commitment to driving positive change.

The Registrar reaffirmed the Council's commitment to supporting EDOHERMA and pledged continued partnership in the areas of medical laboratory regulation, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, capacity building and patient safety.

Both organisations reiterated their shared commitment to strengthening healthcare regulation through collaboration, mutual respect for statutory mandates and coordinated regulatory oversight in the overall interest of protecting the health and wellbeing of Nigerians.
