Akpabio Enforces New Senate Rules, Halts Oshiomhole Mid-Session

Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved decisively on Wednesday to enforce newly tightened leadership rules, shutting down a challenge from Adams Oshiomhole during plenary and signaling a firmer approach to discipline within the chamber.

The confrontation came less than 24 hours after the Senate amended its Standing Orders to tighten eligibility requirements for presiding offices. As Akpabio commenced reading the Votes and Proceedings, Oshiomhole attempted to interject with a point of order an action the Senate President promptly disallowed, citing provisions in the updated 2023 Standing Orders that prohibit such interruptions at that stage of proceedings.

Unyielding, Oshiomhole persisted, prompting Akpabio to seek clarification from former Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu. Kalu affirmed the chair’s interpretation, reiterating that points of order are not admissible during the reading of proceedings, thereby reinforcing the procedural boundary.

As tensions heightened, Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno intervened, cautioning Oshiomhole to desist or risk disciplinary measures. Akpabio then reasserted control of the chamber, directing senators to the relevant sections of the rulebook and emphasizing the necessity of strict compliance.

“We must understand and respect the rules before taking the floor,” Akpabio stated firmly, issuing a clear warning that further disruptions would attract sanctions, including possible removal from the chamber.

Order was subsequently restored, allowing legislative business to proceed without further interruption. Senator Adamu Aliero moved for the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings, a motion seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro.

The brief but pointed standoff highlights the immediate consequences of the Senate’s revised rules, which now require senators to have served at least two consecutive terms to qualify for presiding offices. The amendment effectively sidelines Oshiomhole from such positions and underscores a broader shift toward stricter procedural discipline in the 11th Senate.
